Types of Car Tyres
There are various types of car tyres available in the market. Each type has its own specifications and characteristics to suit variety of cars plying on Indian roads. It also depends on the usage of the car and the requirement of car owners. There are some car owners who customize their car tyres based on their needs and desires.
Not all types of car tyres are available in India but most of them are best suited for Indian roads. In the country there are many new cars fitted with different car tyres. Some of the common types are as follows:
Performance Tyres
Performance tyres are best suited for faster cars where performance and grip plays a vital role. These tyres have shorter life span but are ahead in terms of performance and handling. These are composed of a softer rubber compound and a specific tread block design biased towards outright grip.
All-Season Tyres
All-season tyres are those tyres that are suitable for all weather conditions and behold tread pattern that can enable them to run smoothly all year round. These are composed of harder rubber compound and are designed to maintain a balance between grip, handling, performance, longevity, and wet-weather safety. Many cars are fitted with such tyres but they fail in offering outright grip and cornering performance. These are not excellent summer tyres nor these are excellent winter tyres but still these work the best in all situations and weather conditions.
Wet-Weather Tyres
Wet-weather tyres are composed of harder rubber compound. The hard rubber compound needs to be heated quickly in cold or wet conditions. These tyres are designed for maintaining grip on wet roads and work efficiently on Indian roads especially in cities where heavy rain usually makes driving a challenging task.
Special Winter Tyres
Winter car tyres are designed to work extremely well in winter season especially in the period beginning in early November and ending in late March. These work well when there is snow and ice on roads. However, such situations are not found in India but in other countries these types of tyres work extremely well on snow and wet roads. In such situations the tyres maintain maximum grip. The key disadvantage of these tyres is that they are noisy on dry roads.
All-Terrain Tyres
All-terrain tyres are designed for SUVs and light trucks. These have stiffer sidewalls and bigger tread block patterns. The larger tread block patterns make the tyres noisy on normal roads but on off-roads these tyres work efficiently by griping loose sand and dirt. These types of tyres actually provide a balance between off-road capabilities and good on-road manners.
Mud Tyres
Mud tyres have massive and super-chunky tread blocks and are best suited for roads covered with mud. The design of the tread blocks is in such a way that it provides grip by biting into the muddy surface. These tyres won’t work on other road conditions but when it comes to off-road driving these are the best. These even surpass the off-road capabilities of all-terrain tyres.

Rubber Product Failure $144 Rubber components are used in many demanding applications, from tyres and seals to gloves and medical devices, and failure can be catastrophic. This review of rubber product failure outlines and illustrates the common causes of failure, while addressing ways of avoiding it. There has been increasing pressure to improve performance so that rubbers can be used at higher temperatures and in harsher environments. For example, the under-the-bonnet temperature has increased in some vehicles and new medical devices require longer lifetimes in potentially degrading biological fluids. The expectations of tyre performance in particular are increasing, and retreads have been in the spotlight for failures. The definition of failure depends on the application. For example, a racing car engine seal that lasts for one race may be acceptable, but in a normal car a life span of 10 years is more reasonable. If appearance is critical as in surface coatings and paints, then discolouration is failure, whilst in seals leakage is not acceptable. Each rubber product must be fit for the use specified by the consumer. Failure analysis is critical to product improvement. The problem is obvious to see, for example a hole in a hot water bottle, but the cause of the problem can be much harder to find. It can range from a design fault to poor material selection, to processing problems, to manufacturing errors such as poor dimensional tolerances, to poor installation, product abuse and unexpected service conditions. The rubber technologist must become a detective, gathering evidence, understanding the material type and using deductive reasoning. Testing and analysis of failed materials and components add to the information available for failure analysis. For example, stored aged tyres appeared superficially to be alright for use, but on drum testing small cracks grew more quickly than in new tyres leading to rapid failure in service.
